The Starfield Difference

Starfield's digital lighting control system is often compared to Lutron's EcoSystem and to standard DALI systems available from other manufacturers. This page outlines the basic differences among these systems. Unlike Lutron's proprietary EcoSystem, Starfield’s system is DALI-compliant and uses standard DALI ballasts available from multiple manufacturers.  Starfield's system also incorporates advanced control technology that makes it more flexible, scalable and programmable than a standard DALI system.

Our processes are different, too. Working as both a systems integrator and a manufacturer has allowed us to develop highly efficient digital design and installation tools that leverage the power of digital technology to make full-featured lighting systems practical – even for complex, large-scale applications.

 Comparison Chart Notes

(1) Sensor Connections - Ecosystem sensors and controls connect to the Ecosystem ballast.  Starfield sensors connect to the Starfield controller and the controller connects directly to the DALI bus.

(2) Scalability - The Starfield system uses standard TCP/IP protocol and network architecture that supports unlimited local and global scalability without the use of lighting control panels required by EcoSystem.

(3) Ballast Replacement - Both EcoSystem and Starfield maintain a database of ballast settings which are automatically downloaded when a single ballast is replaced and manually downloaded if multiple ballasts are replaced.

(4) Class 2 Wiring - EcoSystem sensors and controls connect to the EcoSystem ballast with Class 2 cable.  This cable is connected to the EcoSystem ballast so it must be run into the light fixture and separated from power wire in accordance with NEC Article 725 requirements.  Starfield controllers are Class 2 devices which are UL Listed to connect to the DALI bus with either Class 1 or Class 2 cable eliminating the need to run sensor and control wiring into the light fixture.

(5) Non-proprietary Ballasts - Starfield uses standard DALI compliant ballasts available in a wide range of models from multiple manufacturers.  EcoSystem uses proprietary ballasts available only from Lutron in a limited range of models.

(6) Architectural Dimming - Standard DALI ballasts used by Starfield dim to 1% (linear) and 3% (CFL) allowing a single system to be used in both offices and conference rooms. Architectural control systems like the Lutron GRAFIK Eye use 1% dimming not available from EcoSystem ballasts, which only dim to 10%.
